How to Identify a Handloom Silk Saree: Evidence Before Guesswork

Check three separate things: how the cloth was woven, what its fibres are, and where the particular saree was made.

Begin with the product, not a visual trick

To identify a handloom silk saree, start with information about the actual piece in front of you. Ask who supplied it, where it was woven and how the seller supports the description. A photograph of a loom explains a craft process, but it does not establish the origin of every saree in a shop. Keep the product reference alongside the answers you receive.

The phrase “handloom silk” combines two claims. One concerns the weaving method; the other concerns fibre composition. Request a clear answer to each rather than allowing one reassuring word to stand in for both.

Ask for traceable details

Ask the seller to describe the weaving method and identify the producer or source where that information is available. Request any applicable labels and check that the details belong to your selected piece. The official Handloom Mark scheme concerns hand-woven products and provides label authentication. Use the official scheme website rather than relying on a logo in a promotional image.

If information is missing, ask what can be confirmed before payment. You do not need to make an accusation or decide that an unlabelled piece is automatically machine-made. You can simply postpone a purchase until the description is clear enough for you.

Look closely, but keep inspection in perspective

Ask to see the full body, both borders, pallu and reverse. Look for the design and finish you want, and point out anything you would like explained. Weight, price, shine, pinholes or an uneven edge should not replace traceable product information. Do not use a single visual clue as a certificate.

Equally, avoid treating every loose thread or visible mark as an acceptable sign of craft. Ask the team to inspect the exact area with you and agree whether the condition is suitable before buying. Do not pull threads, burn yarn or carry out another damaging home test.

Keep a useful purchase record

Before paying, record the product code, stated composition, stated weaving method, price and any label details provided. Keep the invoice and the seller's care instructions. A clear record is more useful than a screenshot of a general claim.

At Ramalingaa Silk House, you can explore our workshop gallery and ask questions about a shortlisted saree in person or through video shopping. The gallery illustrates our weaving work; confirm the specifications of the selected piece with the team.

Questions shoppers ask

Does a heavier saree prove handloom weaving?

No. Weight is a feature to assess for comfort, not a substitute for documented weaving information.

Can I confirm all this over a video call?

You can ask for product details and label close-ups. If evidence or the picture is unclear, request clarification or arrange a showroom visit.
